Business Unit Description:

The Application Development group (AD) delivers solutions that respond to the business needs of the global capital markets with quality, efficiency, and excellence, using innovative technologies and providing secure information management.

Position Summary:

Focuses on the functional, technical and implementation-related aspects of the work products being produced by the Area for Wealth Management applications including Mutual Funds, Alternate Investment Product and Insurance & Retirement Services as well as the flow of work through the Area from the point of receipt to the delivery of the corresponding work product(s).  Manages and is accountable for the ongoing operations of an AD functional Area consisting of two geographically dispersed, global software development teams across two U.S. locations and India.  Balances area's supply and demand by monitoring work requests, resource allocations and ongoing progress towards stated goals.  Possesses extensive business, technical, and procedural knowledge in order to oversee the workflow, budget, staff, output and overall standards and procedures of a substantial application development and maintenance group.   Manages the client relationship, including expectations and customer satisfaction.  Position requires strategic technical vision as the teams modernize legacy applications to service based architecture and cloud solutions while continuing to enhance the existing business applications.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Spearhead the vision, mission, strategy and objectives of a large-sized software development group responsible for design, development, delivery and maintenance/support of multiple enterprise-level, mission-critical software services and applications serving a large global client base in the Financial Services industry for Wealth Management Services including Mutual Funds, Alternate Investment Product and Insurance & Retirement Services.  Application suite includes legacy mainframe systems and web services architecture.
  • As a senior leader, serve as the single-point-of-contact to internal and external stakeholders for all matters related to software development and broader Technology issues concerning the group
  • Full, end-to-end accountability for on-time, within-budget delivery of Product and Technology roadmaps including design, development and delivery across all software application tiers viz. application tier, database, GUI, access/authentication, APIs etc.
  • Effective collaboration, expectations management and partnership with multiple internal and external stakeholders (Business, Architecture, Testing, Risk, clients etc.)
  • As the Technology owner of multiple applications, direct accountability for ensuring uptime, quality and swift issue resolution in Production
  • Enforce adherence to regulatory, compliance and risk protocols across all facets of the group in a highly regulated environment
  • Represent the software development group in multiple senior-level cross-functional forums concerning strategy, planning, financials, risk, audit etc.
  • Lead and manage two teams including Directors, Managers, software developers, designers and architects spread across multiple geographic locations and time zones (US and India)
  • Function as one of the primary contributors to high-level strategy, design and execution decisions within the group as well as the broader enterprise. Technical strategic vision to drive practical execution of solution in line with organization’s broader IT Strategy of moving to cloud-based, service oriented architecture is key
  • Budget management including annual/quarterly planning, forecasts, reports, reviews, course corrections etc.
  • Effective management of staff including career development, performance appraisals, rewards, hiring etc.
  • Manage vendors/partners providing services including staffing, tools, consulting etc. Contribute to and review SOWs, oversee vendor performance, support formulation of vendor strategies
  • Develop effective location strategies: onshore, near-shore, offshore; insourcing and outsourcing; contract, perm etc.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication channels across the organization (above, below and laterally); provide regular reports, metrics and query responses on statuses, issues, performance, risks etc.
  • Network effectively across the organization to foster effective working relationships with various groups, areas and functions
  • Foster a risk management culture through implementation and demonstration of processes and procedures which identify and mitigate risk

  • 15+ years of experience in the Technology industry, specifically related to software development and architecture. 10+ years in leadership roles with consistently increasing responsibilities. 3+ years in senior leadership roles managing large globally-distributed teams
  • Experience in the financial services industry is highly preferred
  • Experience with mainframe and legacy system modernization initiatives is a plus
  • Bachelor's degree required; Advanced Degree preferred
  • Strong technical foundation is a must. Past hands-on experience as a software developer is a plus but not a must-have
  • Proven experience building and delivering enterprise-level, mission-critical software applications and services under aggressive schedules and budgets
  • Proven experience in setting up and managing globally distributed teams (both onshore and offshore).
  • Proven experience and deep knowledge of Agile software development methodologies. Enterprise Agile is a plus
  • Knowledge of Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery practices is preferred
  • Good knowledge, insight and experience in building applications using Cloud platforms (PaaS and SaaS) is highly preferred
  • Delivery-focused, result-oriented leadership style that can effectively motivate and drive large, cross-functional teams to deliver on aggressive schedules
  • Strong stakeholder management and partnering skills
  • Experience managing vendors to procure staffing, licenses, tools and other consulting services
  • Experience managing multi-million-dollar staff and program budgets
  • Very strong and effective communication skills – written, verbal and presentation. Ability to communicate technical topics to a non-technical audience

Specialized Skills:

  • Vendor management experience
  • Knowledge of Financial Services, gained within capital markets, banking and/or insurance industries, Wealth Managemen Services experience is a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with technology modernization
